Bring the cheerful spirit of the Breton seaside to your table with the Happy Fish Cider Bowl, or Bolée, handmade and hand-painted by Henriot Quimper in Brittany, France.
In Brittany, cider is traditionally served not in a glass, but in a small bowl known as a bolée. These distinctive cider bowls are a familiar sight in Breton crêperies, where local cider is traditionally enjoyed alongside galettes—the savory buckwheat crêpes for which Brittany is famous. And cider isn't its only use. The bolée is also a delightful choice for café au lait, bringing a little of the French café experience to your morning routine.
Quimper’s remarkable tradition of faience pottery dates back to 1690. For more than three centuries, generations of artisans have preserved the art of creating and decorating pottery by hand in Quimper, Brittany. Each piece of Henriot Quimper faience is completely handmade and individually hand-painted by a skilled artist from start to finish. The artist signs the finished piece and marks it Henriot, helping authenticate its origin.
The colorful Happy Fish pattern gives this traditional Breton cider bowl a playful coastal character. With its whimsical hand-painted fish and lively colors, it is especially charming for beach houses, seaside cottages, summer entertaining, and casual coastal dining. Because every Happy Fish bolée is painted entirely by hand, subtle variations in the fish, colors and brushwork are part of the beauty of genuine Quimper pottery. No two pieces are exactly alike.
Whether filled with Breton cider or morning café au lait, the Happy Fish Bolée brings together two wonderful traditions of Brittany: colorful Quimper faience and the convivial custom of drinking cider from a traditional Breton bowl.
